Change your dictation shortcut: Fn key or custom shortcut
The dictation key starts and ends your recording. By default it’s the Fn key (Globe key). You can set any other key or key combination.
Set a different key
- Open ParusVoice and choose “Settings” > “General”.
- In the “Keyboard shortcut” card, click “Primary shortcut”.
- Press the key or combination you want to use.
- Try it with a short dictation in a text field.
Choose a combination you can reach easily and that no other app needs. If it’s already used for another ParusVoice function, the app rejects it. This also applies to combinations that overlap with the Fn key of another shortcut.
Hold or tap
Both work without changing anything. If you hold the key, you dictate for as long as you keep it pressed. If you tap it briefly, dictation runs until you tap it a second time.
Fn key and macOS dictation
The Mac’s built-in dictation can also be on the Fn key. ParusVoice detects this during setup and offers “Free up the key”. Only your click changes the setting in macOS.
More shortcuts
The same card holds two more shortcuts:
- “Ask the assistant”, Fn + Space by default, starts a question to the assistant without a spoken wake word. See Ask the assistant about a text.
- “Quick to dictionary” adds a selection to the dictionary. See Add names and terms to your dictionary.
If the key doesn’t respond at all, it’s usually a permission. The steps to check are in Dictation shortcut not working.
